About Us
Our Story
A Relocation Story from Marcus & Elise
We didn’t come to Steamboat Springs to relocate. We came for a ski weekend.
But by the time we left, we couldn’t stop asking ourselves: What if we stayed?
Back in Dallas, Texas, Marcus and I had everything we thought we were supposed to want. I worked in commercial real estate, and he was thriving in tech sales. We had a beautiful home, two cars, and a life full of conveniences — but something was missing. Our days blurred into a cycle of meetings, traffic, and takeout. We felt successful on paper, but disconnected and burnt out in real life.
Then came that first trip.
Within 24 hours of arriving in Steamboat, we felt something shift. People looked us in the eye. Strangers said hello — on the sidewalk, in coffee shops, even in the lift line. It was such a small thing, but it made us feel human again.
And the dogs. Everywhere. In ski jackets. At restaurants. Strolling down Main Street like locals. As lifelong dog lovers, it felt like the universe was nudging us.
Then came the sunshine, the trails, the powder days, and the tiny kids skiing at Howelsen Hill like future Olympians. That night, we stood outside a downtown restaurant listening to live music — not a planned concert, just part of Steamboat’s everyday rhythm. We looked at each other and knew deep down: This is the kind of place we want to wake up in.
When we got back to Dallas, the contrast was too sharp to ignore.Within six months, we sold our house, wrapped up our jobs, and moved to Steamboat for good.
Now we hike almost every morning. We’ve made friends walking our dogs, at yoga, and even while helping push a stranger’s car out of a snowbank. We sit on our porch and wave to neighbors — and they wave back. We volunteer at events, catch free concerts in the park, and cheer on the kids racing at Howelsen.
We thought we were moving for the mountains. But what we really found was community — one that’s grounded, genuine, and kind.
Steamboat didn’t just give us fresh air. It gave us a fresh start.
